Adult watering plants inside a greenhouse

Gardening and Growing

Horticultural participants learn about organic gardening in our Community Garden, greenhouses and polytunnel. Activities include sowing seeds, planting out seedlings weeding, watering the plants, and harvesting fruit and vegetables for sale.

By caring for the Farm's gardens, borders and green spaces, horticultural placements offer people the chance to participate within their community, meet new friends and gain new skills in a relaxing, therapeutic, and supportive environment.

We offer everyone an opportunity to do ASDAN training and if taken up, every participant will receive a portfolio with certificates on tasks completed and achievements gained.

Time is set aside at every session to interact with all the farm animals – from grooming a goat to cuddling a chick! We currently run a pilot scheme for animal assisted therapy and believe being with animals can improve confidence and reduce feelings of isolation and anxiety. This is offered to horticultural participants as well as those doing animal care sessions, but it’s up to the individual to decide if it’s something they want to do.
